White Turf – International horse racing

Galloping over ice and snow

The White Turf St. Moritz meet has been held in the high-alpine valley since 1907. Always on the first three weekends in February, the frozen Lake St. Moritz turns into a racecourse for a series of spectacular horse races featuring international professional jockeys. On this unique race track, under the radiant blue Engadine winter sky, the jockeys drive their noble thoroughbreds in fast gallops and trotting races over the snow on the frozen surface of the lake. The undisputed highlight is “skijöring”. In this exclusive racing event, contestants are pulled on their skis by a bareback horse at speeds of up to 50 km/h over a 2700m long race track. Whoever takes part in this race needs a good portion of strength, courage and endurance.

While the jockeys gallop their horses over the racetrack, the international crowd of guests, including high society and celebrities, plus the local spectators enjoy all kinds of culinary delights in the much-celebrated champagne climate of St. Moritz. A specially erected tent city with live music, restaurants, bars and shopping facilities provides the right ambience. Yes, White Turf on the frozen St. Moritz Lake is definitely the legendary highlight of the St. Moritz Winter Season: a top event and another exclusivity that makes St. Moritz so unique.
