Glacier & Bernina Express

Panoramic view of the mountain world

Two outstanding historic railway lines of the Rhaetian Railway are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a railway and nature experience of a special kind. On both of the routes, the trains feature special panorama coaches which provide a fantastic view of rugged nature, glaciers and the grandiose construction of viaducts and tunnels.

The Glacier Express travels the route between the two glamorous mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz. It takes around eight hours to complete the entire journey. The absolute highlights of this train ride are the passage over the Oberalp Pass at an altitude of 2033 metres, the crossing of the Rhine Gorge, the "Grand Canyon of Switzerland", the approach to St. Moritz with its lake landscape or the arrival in Zermatt with a view of the Matterhorn.

The Bernina Express runs from Chur to Tirano in Italy. This journey also promises a unique railway experience. The Bernina Express crosses the Alps, passes imposing glaciers until its journey ends under palm trees in the south. From St. Moritz, which lies at the midpoint of the line, you can board a train to go in either direction. The railway line through the Albula Valley and over the Bernina Pass is a masterpiece of engineering. Testimonies to the time of the railway pioneers are the Landwasser viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda or the circular viaduct at Brusio.

The absolute highlight for railway fans is a combined two-day panoramic tour on the Bernina and Glacier Express. The Rhaetian Railway will be happy to make you an offer for this from your point of departure, including overnight accommodation.

Both railway lines are open all year round.
