For three days at the end of January, the frozen Lake St. Moritz is the venue for the Snow Polo World Cup. Against the spectacular mountain backdrop, the lake becomes the arena for the world's highest tournament, the only one to be held on snow. In order to keep the horses safe on snow and ice and at this furious pace, they are protected with specially-made hoof shoes. The event was initiated in 1985 and has enjoyed increasing popularity ever since. During the three days of the Snow Polo World Cup, four international world-class polo teams compete against each other for the cup title. The final match is played on Sunday and the winning team honoured, but prizes are also awarded for the best player and the best polo horse. The polo tournament is one of the most important social events in St. Moritz and is accompanied by black-tie cocktail receptions, dinners and glittering parties. Those who cherish an exclusive setting can follow the spectacle from the specially-built grandstand and be spoilt by the chefs of the first-class hotels. On the weekend of the Snow Polo World Cup, the much-celebrated champagne climate of St. Moritz makes the glasses of the visitor parties ring.
